iPhone on Rails

Agile development with Ruby on Rails is a great tool. You can quickly develop dynamic sites backed by a database. I bet you didn’t know that you could also use Ruby on Rails for iPhone development. Well you can. Thanks to the iPhone on Rails project started by the guys over at Y!factoral. With their Objective Resource, you can easily connect your REST-ful Rails application with a native iPhone application. It provides a way to serialize objects to and from Rails’ standard RESTful web-services (via XML or JSON) and handles much of the complexity involved with invoking web-services of any language from the iPhone. As both an iPhone application host and a Ruby on Rails host, Blue Box Group is excited for the potential of this project. If you’ve got a Rails app you’ve been wanting to port to iPhone, you should check this out. Head on over to their site to find out more!

Blue Box Group Does Vegas!

Blue Box Group is planning on attending this year’s conference as an exhibitor. We’ve got a load of new features and service offerings we’re excited to show off, so be sure to stop by our booth in the exhibition hall and see what’s going on. Keep tuned to our blog, as we’ll have more information unfold as we get closer to the event.

New Relic RPM Integrates with Box Panel

Blue Box Group is known for its world-class support and standing by your side when scaling your Ruby on Rails site. Rails is heralded for its Agile Development, but we all know how resource intensive some apps can get. Blue Box Group helps to cope with these growing pains with its Rails expertise and top-notch support. As part of this mission, we’re continually looking for tools to allow customers to diagnose application bottlenecks. We’ve recently had an exciting opportunity to integrate such a tool within our Box Panel control panel and we’re excited to announce our partnership with New Relic.

New Relic offers RPM™, a Rails Performance Management solution that enables developers and operations teams to quickly and cost effectively monitor, diagnose, and fix application performance problems in real time. More than 1200 organizations use New Relic RPM to monitor and optimize their Rails applications. New Relic is a private company headquartered in San Francisco, California. To learn more about New Relic, visit www.NewRelic.com.

We really like what the folks over at New Relic have to offer which is why we’ve even gone so far as to integrate New Relics monitoring into our Box Panel user interface. Getting started with the RPM is easy! All you have to do is click on the New Relic RPM link in your Box Panel navigation.

You then have two options, you can either sign up for a New Relic RPM account, or you can add a New Relic key from your existing New Relic account. All Blue Box Group customers are eligible for a free New Relic Lite Account, or you can sign-up for higher level of service as well. Once your signed up, you’ll receive an e-mail from New Relic with the extremely simple instructions for getting the RPM integrated with your site. From then on, when you go to your RPM page in Box Panel you’ll get an overview of how your website is performing. 3 simple steps and 5 minutes of your time is all you need to begin monitoring performance metrics.

We’re excited for yet another feature we can bring to you, and hopefully you’ll find this plugin as helpful as we do for gaining greater understanding on the inner workings of your Rails site.

We’re constantly looking to partner with vendors to provide such services to our customers and look forward to bringing you additional features such as this in the future.

Online Chat Beta is Live!

If you’ve logged into your Box Panel account in the past couple of days, you may have noticed a new option sitting on the right hand side of the page that looks something like this:

That’s right folks, we’re pleased to announce that our new Online Chat interface is live and open for business. You can now log on to a private chat room with our support team! When you click the link in your box panel, you’ll see this page:

Along the righthand side, you can see which techs are online, and we’ll make sure to have someone in the room during our business hours, from 7AM to 7PM PST. We’ve also made sure to ensure that anything sent over chat is encrypted—everything you say to us in chat is 100% secure.

One last note: we’re still in Beta with this feature, so let us know if you run into anything odd.

Enjoy, and as always, let us know what you think.
